There is one Easter treat I ask for every year: Peeps. Man, I love those sugary marshmallow bunnies and birds! So I knew for this year’s Easter post I wanted to make something with Peeps. Since treats ‘on a stick’ is the popular thing these days, and since I have a toddler who loves bite size treats, I thought I would make Chocolate Dipped Peeps on a stick. Then I found these adorable bunny ear picks in the baking aisle and decided I would give Bunny Cake Pops a try too! I love cake pops and think they are adorable but I have never made them before. There are a few steps (and patience) required but overall they are easy and might I add super adorable!
Chocolate Peeps Ingredients:
- Package of peeps (I had a six pack)
- Milk or Semi Sweet Chocolate morsels (I used about 1/2 cup)
- Approx 1-2 tsp vegetable oil
- sprinkles to decorate
- cake pop or lollipop sticks
Peeps Directions:
- Melt chocolate in a double boiler or in the microwave until smooth. I start with 30 seconds in the microwave then keep heating and stirring in 10 second intervals until smooth.
- Separate Peeps from one another in package. I used bird shaped peeps for this recipe but any peep shape will work!
- Pour one or two varieties of colorful sprinkles into a couple small dipping bowls.
- Add about 1/2 tsp-1 tsp to start of vegetable oil (depending on how much chocolate you are using) to the chocolate and stir. This helps make it thinner and easier for dipping.
- Dip the bottom of each Peep in the warm melted chocolate until the bottom and sides are coated.
- Immediently dip the chocolate covered Peeps in the sprinkles covering the chocolate.
- Insert cake pop sticks into bottom center of Peeps and place in a glass or holder until chocolate is dry.
- I wrapped some in treat bags and gave as Easter gifts. Others I presented in a small mason jar filled with colorful candy (rainbow Nerds).
Easy, cute, and fun for everyone!

Melt chocolate chips in the microwave until smooth. Add a small amount of oil to thin it out and make it easier to dip the Peeps.
I used (my favorite) Hot Pink Peep Birds. I used a 6 pack and simply separated each Peep on a plate.
Dip the Peeps in the warm melted chocolate, coating the bottom and sides.
Immediately dip in a small bowl of colorful sprinkles, covering the chocolate.
Insert cake pop sticks into the center bottom of each Peep.
Place in a glass or stand to let the chocolate dry.
Serve as a bunch in a small vase or mason jar filled with colorful candy! Such festive table decor and centerpieces!
You can also wrap in treat bags with ribbon and give as Easter or Birthday goodies!
Bunny Cake Pop Ingredients:
Makes about 40-50 cake pops
- Box cake mix, any flavor ( I used Funfetti!)
- Approx 1/2 cup of frosting, any flavor (try a contrasting color from the cake mix- I used Pink Lemonade)
- Colored Candy Melts (I used pink)
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- Icing pin or melted chocolate chips (for drawing the face)
- Heart sprinkles (for bunny nose)
- Bunny ear picks (from Wilton)
- Cake pop or lollipop sticks
Directions:
- Prepare and bake the cake according to box instructions. Let cool completely.
- Cube up cake and place in a food processor, in batches, and pulse until it is fine crumbs.
- Add cake crumbs to a large bowl and mix in frosting. Start with 1/4 cup
then keep adding more until it is the texture of clay. - I use a small ice cream scoop to portion my cake mix so each is about
the same size, then I roll into a ball. - Place balls on a baking
sheet/dish or a plate and freeze for a couple hours (or at least 30 minutes). - Melt a small about, about a couple tbsps, of candy melts in a bowl in the microwave.
- First insert cake pop sticks about halfway into the center of the cake
ball. Then pull out and dip the end of the stick in melted candy and
back into the cake pop. Set the cake pops aside until the melted candy
on the sticks have dried. This with help “glue” the sticks to the pop. - Afterwards
you will melt about 1/3 to 1/2 of a bag of colored candy melts (to start, melt more candy as you need it) in a
small bowl in the microwave. I start with 40 seconds then do 10-15
second intervals until smooth. - Stir in 1 tbsp oil to thin out and help it stick to the cake.
- I suggest dipping in batches (leave half or more of the pops in the fridge to stay cool while you are dipping the first batch).
- Dip
the cake pops down into the melted candy, coating the entire pop. Do
not shake or swirl, just dip and coat then pull up. Tap lightly on the
side of the bowl to remove any excess then place on a holder to dry. - While it is still wet you can add bunny ear picks, a sprinkle heart nose, and any other sprinkles or decorations.
- Let dry completely in cake pop holder.
- After it was dry, I melted chocolate chips and using a toothpick I drew eyes, whiskers, and a mouth for my bunnies!
I love the Spring themed mix and flavor Pillsbury has available now!
I used Funfetti cake and Pink Lemonade frosting.
Prepare and bake the cake according to box instructions. Let cool completely.
Cube up cake and place in a food processor, in batches, and pulse until it is fine crumbs.
Add cake crumbs to a large bowl and mix in frosting. Start with 1/4 cup then keep adding more until it is the texture of clay. Do not add the whole jar of frosting! It will fall apart and be way too sweet!
I use a small ice cream scoop to portion my cake mix so each is about the same size, then I roll into a ball. Place balls on a baking sheet/dish or a plate and freeze for a couple hours (or at least 30 minutes).
First melt a small about, about a couple tbsps, of candy melts in a bowl in the microwave.
You just need this to “glue” the sticks to the pops.
*Afterwards you will melt about 1/3 to 1/2 of a bag of colored candy melts (melt more candy as you need to) in a small bowl in the microwave. I start with 40 seconds then do 10-15 second intervals until smooth.
Stir in 1 tbsp oil to thin out and help it stick to the cake.
I poured my melted candy into a measuring cup so it was easier to dip the cake pops and completely submerge them in the melted candy.
First insert cake pop sticks about halfway into the center of the cake ball. Then pull out and dip the end of the stick in melted candy and back into the cake pop. Set the cake pops aside until the melted candy on the sticks have dried. This with help “glue” the sticks to the pop.
Once you are ready to dip, melt the candy melts (see instructions above) and get ready to work fast.
I suggest dipping in batches (leave half or more of the pops in the fridge to stay cool while you are dipping the first batch).
Dip the cake pops down into the melted candy, coating the entire pop. Do not shake or swirl, just dip and coat then pull up. Tap lightly on the side of the bowl to remove any excess then place on a holder to dry.
*They make cake pop stands but you can use a Styrofoam block or I used a shoe box with holes punched in!
While it is still wet you can add bunny ear picks, a sprinkle heart nose, and any other sprinkles or decorations. Wait to do writing with frosting until the candy is dry.
Let dry completely in cake pop holder.
I then melted chocolate chips and using a toothpick I drew eyes, whiskers, and a mouth for my bunnies!
My little munchkin woke from her nap and just had to have one! She loved it and so will you!
