This weekend we had a fun time together as a family making tie dye crafts.
This was our second time creating tie dye projects and Ava loved it so much the first time I knew we had to do something even better this time! So after some experimenting we decided to make Salt Resist Tie Die Crafts. This is a simple technique using course sea salt to texturize tie dye clothing and create shapes and letters when dyeing.
All you need for this fun craft is a tie dye kit or fabric dye and white or light colored dyeable fabric. Last time we used shirts, a bandanna, and socks. This time we used a small tote bag and a tank top. Clean up was a breeze since I used Hefty® Ultra Strong Drawstring Trash Bags to cover the table, protect layers of fabric, and, of course, hold all our trash without leaking or making a mess!

Salt Resist Tie Dye
What you need:
- Non Iodized Sea Salt
- White or light colored dyeable fabric like shirts, bags, and socks
- Tie Dye Kit {includes multiple colors of dye, rubber bands, and gloves}
- Hefty® Ultra Strong Drawstring Trash Bags
- paper towels
- plastic wrap
Directions:
- Prewash fabric to remove sizing – do not dry, you want to keep your fabric damp for tie dyeing. {Do not use fabric softener.}
- Cover your table with a a cut open Hefty® Ultra Strong Drawstring Trash Bag and top with layers of paper towels.
- Lay fabric out on the table and if using a flat drying method {for example a bag} place another Hefty bag between layers of fabric to keep the dye from seeping through to the other side.
- Now if making designs or words you can liberally sprinkle on sea salt in the desired shapes all over the fabric.
- Wearing protective gloves, add the different colored fabric dyes to the fabric everywhere but the areas that have the salt.
- Let set for 6-8 hours.
- Now, brush off salt and wash in warm water, inside out, with a small amount of soap then dry on low.
For another technique you can use the sea salt to add subtle texture.
- Use rubber bands to roll and tie up your shirt any way you would like. I usually make swirls {wedge shape} or bullseyes {tube shape}.
- Wearing protective gloves, add the different colored fabric dyes to the fabric everywhere. Try not to over saturate.
- Now rub sea salt liberally all over the fabric to add texture.
- Cover the dyed fabric with plastic wrap to keep it damp and let set for 6-8 hours.
- Now, brush off salt, remove rubber bands if used, and wash in warm water, inside out, with a small amount of soap then dry on low.

*Be sure to wash and dry separately for the first few times!
Start with a tie dye kit {found in the craft section at my local super store}.
These kits are super handy and make quite a few small projects.
They include powdered dye in squirt bottles, disposable gloves, and rubber bands.
You will also need a bottle on non iodized sea salt.
This can be messy so be sure to always wear disposable gloves and have a trash can nearby!
I also line my table or work surface with a large trash bag like Hefty® Ultra Strong Drawstring Trash Bags. Top with a layer of paper towels.
Lay fabric out on the table and if using a flat drying method, like this bag, place another Hefty bag between layers of fabric to keep the dye from seeping through to the other side.
Mix up your colors and pour salt into a small bowl.
We started with the back of the bag first and added dye all over.
Ava loved this part and chose her favorite color: purple.
Then she added a pop of pink!
Now rub sea salt liberally all over the fabric to add texture.
Carefully flip it over to do the other side.
Now if making designs or words you can liberally sprinkle on sea salt in the desired shapes all over the fabric.
Ava wanted her name and a heart.
Wearing protective gloves, add the different colored fabric dyes to the fabric everywhere but the areas that have the salt.
Try not to over saturate as we did here on the heart. The colors will bleed into the salt.
My husband did have a great tip- use a bleach pen if this does happen {after you wash and try the shirt} and reshape the design.
Let set for 6-8 hours.

Cover the dyed rolled fabric with plastic wrap to keep it damp and let set for 6-8 hours.
Now, brush off salt into the trash can and remove rubber bands if used.
Wash in warm water, inside out, with a small amount of soap then dry on low.
I loved the end result of this craft and Ava was eager to show off her new bag right away!
Our first time tie dyeing we made patriotic shirts for the whole family.

Definitely messy but worth doing and creating with our little ones. This open ups their creativity side and exploration to DYI ideas while we are busy working with our order term paper school projects.
